Silver (Coho) Salmon
For many anglers, silver salmon are one of the biggest reasons Valdez is such an incredible fishing destination. The reputation for coho fishing here is legendary, and when the run is strong, the action in the Valdez Arm and Port of Valdez can be fast, exciting, and absolutely unforgettable. If you’re looking for a true Alaska salmon-fishing experience, chasing silvers in Valdez is hard to beat.
Coho salmon are powerful fighters, aggressive biters, and outstanding table fare. They’re also one of the most exciting species to target because every trip has the potential to turn into nonstop action. Since silvers often travel in schools, anglers may also encounter king salmon, rockfish, and Cod, which adds even more excitement to the day.
Description
In the ocean, coho salmon are bright silver with black spots on the back and upper tail. They have white gums and are often seen jumping at the surface, which makes them one of the most recognizable salmon in Alaska.
Coho size can vary depending on migration timing and feeding conditions, but in Valdez they are commonly caught in the 10- to 12-pound range, with larger fish showing up later in August.
Location
In Valdez, coho salmon migrate into the Valdez Arm, the Port of Valdez, and nearby waters throughout the summer. As the run progresses, silvers may also be caught from shore, but charter boats often have the best access to the most productive areas.
Availability
Coho salmon generally arrive in Valdez Arm by mid July, with peak fishing typically running from mid-August through early September. In many seasons, excellent fishing can start by the end of July and continue through Labor Day. That timing makes coho season one of the most exciting stretches of the summer charter calendar in Valdez.
Technique
In Valdez, silvers are commonly caught by trolling with downriggers or by mooching when the fish are schooled tightly. Mooching typically involves drifting with a small lead crescent weight and a sharp hook baited with cut plug or strip herring. When a school moves through, the fishing can get frantic in the best way, with multiple anglers hooked up at the same time. From the Valdez arm north anglers are allowed 6 silvers per day!
